Extraction

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ

South Korean operator in a vehicle interior from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4

DMZ is back as a full third mode, not a beta experiment parked next to Warzone. Twenty squads of up to three deploy into Hajin, a post-campaign exclusion zone, to recover abandoned military technology. You can run Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, or Free Roam in the same raid. Gear persists until you go MIA. Other players are not ambient — killing them raises notoriety and paints you on the map.

Read Hajin for the terrain and extract for the last minute. The procedure is how to extract in DMZ. Campaign spoilers live on story; play that first if you care.

The loop: FOB, infil, raid, extract

Between raids you live in the Forward Operating Base. Stash, vendors, Gunsmith (pay cash for guns and attachments), a 3D printer for NVGs, vests, backpacks, and streaks, a bounty board, and a boss board. Operators in DMZ have separate inventories and trait trees from their 6v6 skins. Dying can wipe a trait tree — that is the risk Infinity Ward is using instead of a soft slap on the wrist.

Infil is a choice: foot, helicopter, plane, or a vehicle you pay to bring. You are not dumped at a random beach every time. Paid infil is how you start on the POI you actually need for a Story Mission. Once inside, 40-minute raids are the advertised pace. You will not loot the whole map. Pick a lane, fill a backpack, leave. Greed is how kits die.

Story, Dynamic Ops, Free Roam

Story Missions continue the campaign in live raids and will expand with seasons. They are built to be replayable, not one-and-done cinematics. Dynamic Operations randomize the steps, not just the pin — shutting down a weapons program might mean a different sequence of hacks, escorts, and holds each match. Free Roam is the sandbox: casino vault, lieutenant hunts, supply drops, radio towers, repaired trucks.

AI escalates with your noise. Low threat is patrols. Medium brings lieutenants. High brings helicopters and armor. Critical brings Deathstalkers, Juggernauts (the ones with music in the headphones), and elite strike teams. The stealth meter is a solo tool: white to yellow to orange as you are about to be seen. Use it. 6v6 habits will get you swarmed.

Other players, and why notoriety exists

Infinity Ward is not pretending this is PvE. Bounty leaderboards track the people who hunt operators. If you want a peaceful loot run, do not third-party a squad on a skyhook and expect the map to forget. Notoriety is the wanted level for PvP. High notoriety is a payday for someone else.

Weapon progression is shared with Multiplayer, but you still pay cash in DMZ Gunsmith to actually build the class you unlocked in 6v6. Take a simple loadout philosophy: one reliable primary, plates, a trophy if you plan to hold an exfil. Then go to Hajin and learn where not to walk without a gas mask.

Field questions

Frequently asked questions

Is DMZ a Warzone playlist?+

No. It is a third mode inside Modern Warfare 4. Hajin later appears in Warzone as a BR map in Season 01.

How many players are in a DMZ raid?+

Twenty squads of up to three — about 60 operators — plus a dense AI population.

Does dying reset everything?+

You lose what you were carrying. Trait trees can wipe. Stash items that were not on your body stay in the FOB.
