Beta-informed preview

Modern Warfare 4 Review

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 key art used as the review header

This is not a day-one review. Modern Warfare 4 has not launched. It is a preview built from official briefings and the August 2026 open beta, which is the most a wiki can honestly say in September. The gunplay is the success. The campaign mission is the surprise. DMZ is still a promise with excellent documentation. Kill Block is either the most interesting map in years or a novelty, depending on your patience.

Buy questions: editions and the compare tool. Feel questions: movement and the tier list.

What already works

Removing bloom is the best systems decision Infinity Ward has made since the 2019 reboot’s gunfeel. Hipfire is a conversation with the barrel, not with a random number. Mantle-to-slide is the movement toy that does not break the camera. Entrenched proves the campaign still wants to be a linear war movie, complete with infinite-spawn pressure if you camp. That will delight people who hated the open-mission experiments of other years.

The twelve-map promise matters because the beta six were distinct: Rooftops is vertical, Lithium is industrial mid-range, Transit 213 is chaos. If launch actually ships twelve at that variety, 6v6 has a floor. The M4 and ISO Nightshade being good is not a failure of balance; it is CoD. The sandbox at least lets Kastov and Oris exist as genuine alternatives.

What is still a bet

DMZ’s documentation is better than MWII’s ever was. Trait-tree wipes, notoriety, weather, and a dedicated FOB are the right ideas. We have not lived a season of it. Kill Block’s 500 layouts can become “I never learned a map.” Texture streaming plus always-online private matches will anger anyone who wanted a LAN night. Dropping last-gen and Game Pass is a commercial choice you will feel in your friend list.

Vault is cosmetics. It did not make the beta better. Spend $70 if you want the game; spend $100 if you were going to buy the pass anyway. The review will be updated when a real score exists. Until then, treat this page as a briefing, not a Metacritic row.

Who it is for

For you if you missed grounded Modern Warfare gunplay and hated omnimovement. For you if you want a campaign that looks like a war, not a theme park. For you if you missed DMZ and did not want it as a Warzone appendix. Not for you if you need Game Pass, last-gen, or a movement shooter that plays like a movement shooter.

The beta gunplay is the strongest argument for a yes. A full review needs launch maps, DMZ seasons, and netcode under load.

Should I pre-order Vault?+

Only for cosmetics and BlackCell. The game is in Standard.

Is this an official score?+

No. Unofficial wiki preview based on public beta and official intel.
