Input and feel
Modern Warfare 4 Controls
Modern Warfare 4’s control story is a rejection of two recent extremes. It will not drag like Modern Warfare II’s heaviest builds, and it will not omni-slide like Black Ops 6 and 7. Infinity Ward rebuilt mantling, added mantle-to-slide, ledge hang and shimmy, and removed hipfire bloom. The result is a game that rewards the first accurate shot more than the tenth slide cancel.
Split the work: this hub is philosophy and defaults. The movement guide is the tech. The settings page is deadzones, ADS multipliers, and the PC TPM gate. The Mobility Course was the beta’s empty gym; after September 1 it is gone with the test playlists. Learn mantle-to-slide in a private firing range or leftover client, then take it into maps.
Default layout, and what to change first
Controller defaults will feel familiar to anyone who played a Modern Warfare since 2019: LT/L2 aim, RT/R2 fire, stick click sprint, face-button jump/crouch depending on bumper jumper. Tactical is still the layout most FPS players should try first — crouch on the right stick — because slide-to-fire is a face-button tax on default.
PC defaults are WASD, mouse 1/2, shift sprint, space jump, C/Ctrl crouch, R reload, F use, G lethal. Turn mouse smoothing off. Keep your Black Ops 7 coefficient if you have one; the beta defaulted some accounts to 1.33. If you use a mouse wheel bind, lower the debounce so the input queues faster.
First-session changes that actually matter
- ADS sensitivity multiplier 0.8 (0.7 if you pre-aim a lot)
- Min deadzones as low as your stick drift allows (2/2 is a common start)
- Tactical Sprint Assist on, delay 0, if you want CoD’s usual sprint
- Mantle Assist off if you keep vaulting into gunfire
- Vibration off for aim
Ballistic Authority is a control issue
No bloom means hipfire is a skill check, not a dice roll. People coming from bloom-heavy titles will over-ADS in hallways. People coming from omnimovement will over-slide and lose the first shot. The correct habit is: pre-aim corners, hipfire only when the barrel is already on the body, and use mantle-to-slide as a traversal tool, not a personality.
Switch 2 adds optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and full cross-play. That is a real input choice, not a gimmick; if you play docked with the mouse grips, treat it as a PC sensitivity problem and steal numbers from the settings page.

Frequently asked questions
Does MW4 have omnimovement?+
No. Infinity Ward kept grounded movement and added mantle control, hanging, and mantle-to-slide instead.
What is Ballistic Authority?+
Official name for removing hipfire bloom so shots travel where the weapon is pointed.
Is there a tutorial for movement?+
Yes. The Mobility Course in the beta is the dedicated trainer and is expected to remain as a playlist or firing-range cousin.
